Problems with Full Dentures
The main problem with wearing full dentures is due to the changes that occur soon after your natural teeth are removed. Once your natural teeth have been extracted then your jawbone quickly begins to change shape, affecting the fit and stability of full dentures. What Are Implant Supported Dentures?
Implant supported dentures are held firmly in place with dental implants. The dentures clip onto the implant by means of special attachments on the fitting surface of the denture. Once in position, the denture cannot move or slip out of place. One of the really appealing things about this treatment is that often our dentist will only need to place between two and four dental implants to secure a complete lower denture.
This helps keep treatment very affordable and frequently it is possible to place the dental implants towards the front of the mouth, maximizing use of the jawbone in the area where it is strongest and thickest, avoiding the need for bone grafts.
A greater number is likely to be required to secure an upper denture, but it’s often lower dentures that are the most problematic. With an upper denture, retention is greater due to the upper palate being covered up so the denture is less likely to become loose and uncomfortable.
If you do require your upper denture to be implant supported, then it can be constructed slightly differently from a conventional upper denture. Instead of covering up your palate, your upper denture can be constructed in a horseshoe shape, very similar to your lower denture.
This will make the denture feel far less bulky so it is even more comfortable to wear, and at the same time uncovering your upper palate means uncovering lots of taste buds, so eating will become more pleasurable, especially with teeth that are held firmly in place.
