If going to the dentist makes you nervous, you’re not alone—and we’re here to help. At Envy Smile Dental Spa, we offer several ways to help you feel calm and at ease during your visit, including dental anesthesia and dental sedation. Whether you’re coming in for a routine procedure or something more complex, our goal is to make your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Our Brooklyn sedation dentist is trained in sleep dentistry, including IV dental sedation, which is a great option if you’ve been putting off treatment due to anxiety, sensitivity, or a strong gag reflex. With safe and personalized care, we’ll make sure you’re relaxed from start to finish.

    What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses dental sedatives to help people feel more deeply relaxed while in the dental chair. The type of sedation provided by our top dentist can vary tremendously depending on the treatment required and your level of anxiety.

For example, if you only feel mildly anxious and want something to take the edge off, your dentist can use a mild sedative to help you feel more comfortable. Someone who is more anxious or requires lengthier treatment will benefit from a deeper level of dental sedation that can allow them to feel so relaxed that they fall asleep.

How Can Sedation Dentistry Help You?

When dealing with anxiety, finding ways to manage and even forget about your fear is better than ignoring your teeth.

Some ways that sleep sedation dentistry helps you get over your anxiety include:

    Types of Sedation Dentistry

There are three main types of sedation dentistry: laughing gas or Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation (IV dental sedation).

    Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide provides the lightest form of sedation and is the only sedative where you can drive yourself home afterward. It is given in a carefully controlled mixture via a small mask fitting over your nose. You simply inhale the gas and will start to feel relaxed and almost euphoric in a matter of seconds. You continue to inhale the gas for the duration of your treatment. Once the gas is turned off, you may be given pure oxygen to breathe for a short while, as this helps eliminate the gas from your body more quickly. Otherwise, it won’t take long for the effects of the gas to wear off entirely, leaving you back to normal and ready to go home.

    Oral Sedation

An oral sedative is given in pill form shortly before your appointment and will take a little while to take full effect. It helps you feel more deeply relaxed and is sometimes used in combination with Nitrous oxide to provide a deeper form of dental sedation. Afterward, you cannot drive yourself home, and you will need someone with you to take you home.

    Intravenous Sedation

If you need dental IV sedation, it is given through a vein in your hand or the crook of your arm. It is administered continuously throughout your treatment, usually by a qualified dental anesthesiologist.

The sedative takes effect extremely quickly, and you may feel so relaxed you fall asleep but can easily be awoken by the dental team. You will still be able to respond to questions, but you won’t remember anything or very little about your treatment once you come around afterward. It’s the perfect solution if you want to go to sleep and wake up with a new smile, knowing you have completed an extensive amount of dentistry without any fears or phobias.

    General anesthesia

General anesthesia may be necessary if you must have a lengthy procedure or your dental phobia is severe. You’re completely unconscious during the entire procedure, so you’ll need assistance to get home. Have someone nearby for the rest of the day. Sinus lifts, bone grafts and gum grafts sometimes require this level of dental anesthesia.

No matter which sedation dental option you choose, you can be sure your treatment is completely pain-free. Your sedation dentist in Booklyn, NY will use an anesthetic and a sedative. Dental anesthesia can be administered after you are sedated, which is perfect for anyone with a phobia of needles.

    Types of Sedation Dentistry

    Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Generally, yes, but any form of anesthetic carries a small risk. You can rest assured your dentist will take extensive precautions to minimize this risk as much as possible. Before considering you for sedation dentistry, they will review your medical history and talk with you to discuss the pros and cons of sedation dentistry.

If a light or moderate level of sedation doesn’t feel like quite enough, or if you need a more significant amount of dental work, sleep dentistry might be the solution for you.

With sleep sedation dentistry, you will feel deeply relaxed, and afterward, you will most likely remember very little if anything about your appointment. It’s the perfect solution if you do need a longer appointment or more complicated work, and especially as your dentist can complete more treatment during a single visit.

Our team will also keep you with them for a short while afterward to make sure you are properly recovered before sending you home to relax and recover.

I went to the Dentist today for the first time in years due to having bad dental anxiety from unpleasant past experiences. I was so nervous but the second I spoke with Dr. Weiner and her team they put me at ease. They were empathetic, compassionate, and really spent the time to make sure I was comfortable and knew what was going on. Everything was so easy. Highly recommend this office and Dr. Weiner and staff. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I went to Envy dental spa yesterday for my first visit. All of the staff was very friendly and attentive including the front desk, hygienist, and dentist. I need major dental work done and also have dental anxiety. The dentist explained everything in detail on my x-rays and exactly what will be done step by step. I am very happy with Envy!

Dr Weiner is a lovely person and fantastic with children. My son is extremely anxious with coming to the dentist. More than usual and to the point of not walking into the dentist office. He actually enjoys coming to the office and interacting with all the people from the front of the desk to the back of the office. Today he received his first shot. I usually take him to get gas because he simply can not tolerate any shots. The entire staff helped him through this experience. From the movie they played, gifts they gave him, to Dr Weiner’s special way of applying the needle so he never felt it. She talked him through it. They laughed. I am thankful and appreciative.
