Veneers will often form part of successful smile makeovers and are a particular technique that we often use here at Envy Smile Dental Spa. This is because veneers can be such a great treatment for hiding teeth that may have become worn, chipped or stained, or for closing up any spaces in between your teeth that may be irritating you. Veneers can prove to be a simple and straightforward solution that is minimally invasive. So comparing Lumineers vs porcelain veneers, how do they differ?
Lumineers vs Porcelain Veneers: Explaining the Difference
Veneers are made from very thin pieces of porcelain and are typically 0.5 mm in thickness. Porcelain veneers are custom-made to fit over tooth surfaces that have been pre-prepared by our dentist (learn more about the procedure: Laminate Veneers FAQ’s). Lumineers are made from a special type of porcelain called Cerinate porcelain. This is a patented and ultra-strong form of porcelain. Therefore Lumineers vs porcelain veneers are incredibly thin, typically just 0.2 mm in thickness. So often unlike in other dental restoration treatments, tooth preparation is unnecessary for Lumineers. The special porcelain used to make these veneers is amazingly translucent, allowing us to create wonderfully aesthetic results to give you the smile of your dreams.

Preserving Your Natural Teeth
Another thing to bear in mind about Lumineers is that any tooth preparation is minimal. With traditional veneers we need to prepare your teeth under a local anaesthetic, removing some tooth surface so your new veneers will not look too bulky or unnatural. Due to their ultra-thin design, tooth preparation is often not needed, preserving your natural tooth structure so if you wish, this treatment could be reversible at some point in the future.
Digitally designed, your new Lumineers will fit exactly over the front surfaces of your teeth, giving you a flawless and long-lasting smile. They will immediately feel natural and comfortable and should last for many years before you have to think about replacing them, as unfortunately no tooth restoration will last forever!
Using Lumineers in Combination with Other Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments
Some people will want to use Lumineers to cover up all upper and lower front teeth, creating a cosmetically perfect smile. This can look stunning, but you do not need to opt for this level of restoration if you don’t want to. Quite often we will design a new smile using more than one treatment as often covering up multiple teeth may be unnecessary. Think about using Lumineers in conjunction with our advanced tooth whitening treatments (read also: Teeth Whitening FAQ’s), or perhaps while replacing older and stained fillings that could otherwise mar the appearance of your new smile.
