    Pediatric Dentistry Brooklyn, NY

At Envy Smile Dental Spa, pediatric care is overseen by Dr. Marianna M. Weiner, DDS, alongside a team experienced in treating kids from their very first tooth through their teenage years. We combine evidence-based pediatric protocols, things like sealants, fluoride treatment, and early orthodontic monitoring, with a calm, spa-like environment designed to take the fear out of going to the dentist.

Every recommendation we make for your child is based on what we actually see at that visit, not a one-size-fits-all script, and we’re always transparent about why a treatment is or isn’t necessary. Brooklyn families trust us because we treat every child’s mouth as a developing system worth understanding, not just a set of teeth to check off a list.

    Patient Stories

    Patient Story

    Teen Ortho Before and After
What started off as a simple orthodontic braces case turned out to be something far more interesting. Turns out, our patient Nikita has genetically missing a few teeth. Instead of keeping the spaces open and placing implants at 21, like every other orthodontist was advising, we went with a different approach. After explaining the situation to his parents, we decided to push all his back teeth forward to perfectly line up and mimic the teeth they’re supposed to be replacing- we made it more seamless by slightly reshaping the teeth. Now, he still has plenty of back teeth to chew with and a perfect lined up smile in the front with no need to get implants anymore.

Teen Ortho Before and After 2
This young girl’s parents were told that she needs to wait until she is 13 or 14 years old in order to start orthodontic treatment. Fortunately, her mother, a teacher, noticed that some children in her class, who were her daughter’s age, were wearing appliances in their mouths that were changing their profile, facial symmetry, and broadened their smiles within only a few months. On the recommendation of another parent, she brought her daughter to our office. The girl’s lower underdeveloped jaw was expanded and repositioned in 6 months. Later, her smile line was broadened and profile perfected./caption]

This kind of problem is best resolved at an early stage of development to avoid improper growth of the teeth. Besides removing this bad habit, we were able to close her anterior open bite and create a beautiful smile before she reached her teenage years.

What’s the Right Age for a Child’s First Dental Visit?

The general rule pediatric dentists follow is “first tooth, first visit,” which usually lands somewhere around a child’s first birthday. It sounds early to many parents. Still, that first appointment isn’t about a deep cleaning or a checklist of procedures; it’s about catching potential issues before they become real problems and getting your child comfortable with the idea of a dental chair before they’re old enough to dread it.

At Envy Smile Dental Spa, we use this early visit to check how baby teeth are coming in, talk through feeding habits like bottle use or thumb sucking, and answer the questions new parents almost always have but don’t know who to ask. Waiting until a child is school-age to schedule a first visit means missing years of preventive guidance, and it often means the first dental experience coincides with an actual problem, like a cavity, rather than a calm, low-pressure introduction.

Starting early sets the tone for a lifetime of stress-free dental visits, which matters more than most parents realize until their teenager is the one who isn’t afraid of the dentist.

Why Are Baby Teeth So Important?

It’s tempting to think baby teeth don’t matter much since they’re going to fall out anyway, but that mindset causes more problems than it solves. Baby teeth do a lot of quiet work behind the scenes, and losing them too early, whether from decay or injury, can throw off everything that comes after.

For one, baby teeth act as placeholders for permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost prematurely, neighboring teeth can drift into that space, which often means the permanent tooth underneath comes in crooked, impacted, or crowded, the exact issues that lead to years of orthodontic treatment down the line.

Baby teeth are also essential for proper chewing and nutrition during a period when kids are developing eating habits that stick with them, and they play a real role in speech development, since several sounds depend on the tongue making contact with the front teeth in specific ways.

There’s also a less obvious reason: healthy baby teeth teach kids what a healthy mouth feels like. Children who grow up with consistent care and cavity-free checkups tend to carry those habits and that comfort with dental visits into adulthood. Treating baby teeth as disposable is a mistake that tends to show up years later, in a teenager’s orthodontic bill or a young adult’s anxiety about dental chairs.

    Common Dental Problems in Children

    Tooth Decay

Caries, or tooth decay, is a preventable disease. When your child teeth and gums are consistently exposed to large amounts of starches and sugars, acids may form that begin to eat away at tooth enamel. Candy, cookies, soda and even fruit juices are rich of carbohydrate and destroy children teeth. Those deposits bond with the bacteria that normally survive in your mouth and form plaque. The combination of deposits and plaque forms acids that can damage the mineral structure of teeth, with tooth decay as the end result and it may negatively impact your quality of life.

    Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Daily brushing and flossing helps to prevent the buildup of food particles, plaque and bacteria in your mouth. Food particles left in the mouth deteriorate and cause bad breath. While certain foods such as garlic may cause temporary bad breath, consistent bad breath may be a sign of gum disease or other medical problem. In many children bad breath may be due to allergies, sinus problems or tonsil and adenoid issues.

    Gum Disease

Gum, or periodontal, disease can cause inflammation, tooth loss and bone damage. Children can have gingivitis from too much plaque, but rarely have periodontal disease. Gum disease begins with a sticky film of bacteria called plaque. Gums in the early stage of disease, or gingivitis, can bleed easily and become red and swollen. Gum disease is highly preventable and can usually be avoided by daily brushing and flossing.

    Canker Sores

Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are small sores inside the mouth that often reoccur. Generally lasting one or two weeks, the duration of canker sores can be reduced by the use of antimicrobial mouthwashes or topical agents. The canker sore has a white or gray base surrounded by a red border.

Common Dental Problems in Children Brooklyn

Do You Offer Dental Sedation for Kids?

Yes. For anxious kids, very young, or who need more extensive treatment in a single visit, Envy Smile Dental Spa offers nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, as a gentle sedation option. It’s inhaled through a small mask, takes effect quickly, and wears off just as fast once treatment is finished, which means most kids are back to themselves within minutes of the mask coming off.

What makes nitrous oxide a good fit for pediatric patients its mild and controllable. Your child stays conscious and able to respond throughout the appointment, but the anxiety and discomfort that usually accompany dental work are significantly dulled. For a child who tenses up at the sound of a drill or panics at the sight of dental tools, that difference can mean the gap between a traumatic appointment and one they barely remember being nervous about.

Not every child needs sedation; plenty of kids do just fine with a calm chairside manner and a little distraction, but for those who do, we always discuss the option beforehand, walk parents through exactly what to expect, and make sure it’s the right call for your child’s specific needs and medical history.

    Special Needs Dentist for Kids

Children with sensory sensitivities, developmental differences, or medical complexities often need more than a standard dental visit; they need a team that’s patient, flexible, and genuinely experienced with adapting care to fit the child rather than expecting the child to adapt to a rigid routine.

Our pediatric team takes extra time with special-needs patients, adjusting everything from appointment length and lighting to communication style and sedation options. For some kids, that means shorter, more frequent visits to gradually build comfort.

For others, it means using nitrous oxide to manage sensory overload or anxiety that would otherwise make treatment impossible. We also work closely with parents beforehand to understand specific triggers, preferences, and past experiences (good or bad) so the visit can be shaped around what we already know rather than figuring it out in the chair.

The goal is always the same: every child deserves dental care that meets them where they are, not a one-size-fits-all appointment that ignores their individual needs.

    Pediatric Dental Second Opinion

If another dentist has recommended an extensive treatment plan for your child, multiple extractions, a crown, and sedation for a routine filling, it’s completely reasonable to want a second set of eyes before moving forward. Kids’ mouths are still developing, and treatment plans that make sense for adult teeth don’t always translate cleanly to a six-year-old’s mouth.

At Envy Smile Dental Spa, we welcome second-opinion visits for pediatric patients and never pressure parents into proceeding with a treatment plan they’re unsure about. We’ll review the original diagnosis, take our own look (often with fresh X-rays if needed), and give you an honest, independent read on whether the recommended treatment is necessary, whether there’s a more conservative option, or whether watching and waiting makes more sense for your child’s situation.

Parents shouldn’t feel rushed into major decisions about their kids’ teeth, and a second opinion costs you very little compared to the peace of mind it buys.

    Procedures We Offer

Our pediatric dental services cover the full range of preventive, restorative, and developmental care kids need as their teeth come in and change over the years.

Preventive care includes gentle cleanings, fluoride treatment, and dental sealants, which add a protective barrier over the chewing surfaces of molars where cavities most often start. We also provide oral hygiene and diet instruction, since many pediatric dental issues trace back to habits that are easy to correct early but harder to undo later.

For kids who need more than prevention, we offer restorative dentistry, including cosmetic, tooth-colored fillings and children’s root canals when a tooth’s nerve is affected by deep decay or injury. Nitrous oxide is available throughout these procedures for kids who need extra comfort.

We also address developmental issues directly. Space maintainers help keep the gap open when a baby tooth is lost early, preventing the shifting that leads to crowding later. We provide removable braces starting around age 6 to 7 for kids who need early intervention, and full orthodontic treatment typically begins around age 11 to 12, once enough permanent teeth have erupted.

For habits that can affect bite and jaw development, including thumb sucking, tongue thrust, lip sucking, and bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching, often linked to headaches), we offer functional appliances, sometimes called habit breakers, designed to correct these patterns before they cause lasting structural issues.

Every child’s mouth develops on its own timeline, so our approach to procedures is always based on what we see at each visit, not a fixed checklist applied the same way to every kid.

Does Insurance Cover Pediatric Dental Care?

Most preventive and restorative pediatric services, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and fillings, are covered at least partially by major dental insurance plans, and Envy Smile Dental Spa works with most insurance providers to make that coverage easy to use.

Our staff will verify your plan’s specifics and file claims on your behalf, so you’re not stuck deciphering insurance language on your own while also trying to manage your child’s care. One important note: our practice does not currently accept Medicaid, and purely cosmetic treatments are typically not covered by insurance regardless of provider, though most pediatric visits fall outside that cosmetic category entirely.

For families without coverage, or whose plan doesn’t fully cover a recommended treatment, we offer CareCredit and Springstone financing options, so cost doesn’t have to be the deciding factor in whether your child gets timely care. If you’re unsure what your specific plan covers for pediatric services, our team is happy to check before your child’s appointment so there are no surprises afterward.
